ICAR-KVK, West Garo Hills organizes 109 crop varieties release programme on 11th August 2024 at KVK campus.
The programme was attended by 45 farmers and KVK staffs. It featured special lectures on central sponsored schemes and flagship programme. The programme started
by welcome address by Ms. Priyanka Saha, SMS (Agronomy) in which she welcomed the farmers and gave a brief about the programme. Dr. Sagarika Borah, CTO (Animal Science)
highlighted the need of animal husbandry for enhancing farmers’ income. Dr. Tarun K. Das, SMS (Agricultural extension) gave a lecture on PM-KUSUM programme and various measures
to increase the farm productivity. Dr. Jayashree Mohanta, SMS (Plant protection) in her address told the farmers about importance of natural farming and explained in details the
principle of natural farming. Dr. Monica Suresh Singh, SS and Head elaborated on the 109 varieties released which include 23 varieties of cereals, 9 of rice, 2 of wheat, 1 of barley,
6 of maize 1 of sorghum, 4 of millets, 10 of pulses 7 of oilseeds, 7 of fodder, 7 of sugarcane, 5 of cotton, 1 of jute and 40 varieties of horticulture. Use of these varieties will help us
in mitigating climate change, add to bio-fortification and increase farmer’s income. The road map of increasing farmers’ income was also discussed in details which include increasing production,
reducing production cost, giving fair price for agricultural produce, compensation for loss in natural disasters, diversification of agriculture, not just traditional crops, fruits, flowers, medicine,
bee keeping, value addition, making different things for raw material and natural farming. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Mr. Ramawavatar Yadav, SMS (Horticulture). The programme was coordinated
by Dr. Tarun K. Das, Dr. Sagarika Borah and Ms. Priyanka Saha.
